Fresh tattoo: no direct sun for 3–4 weeks. The surface skin closes in about 2 weeks, but full healing runs 4–6 weeks. Direct UV on a healing tattoo can blister it, pull ink out, and permanently fade or blur the lines. Key points: Don't use sunscreen on a healing tattoo. It's an open wound — cover it with loose clothing instead. After it's healed, SPF 30+ any time it's exposed. Sun fading is the number one cause of a tattoo looking old. Black and grey holds up better than color. Reds, yellows, and pastels break down fastest under UV. No tanning beds either — same rule, worse exposure. If it's already peeling and flaking, you're close, but still keep it covered until there's no scabbing and the skin feels like normal skin again.
